Why Youth in Agribusiness Hold the Key to Kenya’s Food and Economic Future

Kenya’s youth unemployment rate stands at 67%, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. At the same time, over 70% of Kenya’s rural population depends on agriculture yet the sector contributes less than 25% to GDP. The problem is really not a lack of land or talent but its more of how we structure opportunity.

BAYE Africa believes the future of food, jobs, and climate action in Kenya depends on putting the right tools in the hands of youth, especially those in rural and marginalized regions of Kenya and Africa at large, and among young women and persons with disabilities, who are often excluded from economic programs.

Shifting the Focus to Market Access for Agripreneurs

For decades, many global developers have focused on integrating their products into communities. But here in Kenya's #agriprenuership landscape, the real game-changer is about getting things out.
Smallholder #farmers are incredible innovators, yet #marketaccess remains their toughest hurdle. It's not just about roads, though those are vital. It's about bridging the information gap. For instance, while many #digital platforms are helping farmers access real-time price data and connect with buyers, the vast majority still rely on middlemen, often receiving 30-50% less than market value. Post-harvest losses, due to poor storage and transportation, can also wipe out up to 40% of their produce before it even reaches a #consumer.
Local changemakers, you're building solutions on the ground. Please keep pushing for farmer #collectives, value addition at source, and creative digital linkages. Global experts, this isn't just a "Kenya problem or African problem." It's a blueprint for #resilient food systems worldwide. Let's shift our focus to empowering market entry for these dedicated agripreneurs. This means investing in #inclusive supply chains, smart #infrastructure, and, crucially, equitable partnerships that honor local knowledge and ownership.
The potential here isn't just about feeding Kenya; it's about shaping a more equitable and sustainable global food future. What are your thoughts?
